Picture 111 Now What?

Complete any other site content, designs, or calls to action that you want

By now you should have a cusomized site with content, widgets, and know your way around fairly well. But before you close your laptop and head to the beach, let’s make sure we tie up all of the common loose ends:

  1. Permalinks
Make sure you click into Settings > Permalinks and configure your links from the standard WordPress ?post=number to something more search friendly and less visually awkward. (Note, if you’re a LoadedWordPress user, these should be configured for you by default, but doesn’t hurt to check).
  2. Search Engines
If ‘Search Engines Blocked’ is showing at the top of your admin dashboard, do yourself a favor and click it, then select the radio button that says ‘I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers.’ You may also find this setting in Settings > Privacy.
  3. Calls to Action
If you’re in the business of being in business, make sure you let people know how to find you. This may be accomplished in a number of ways, including a nice big glowing button that says ‘Contact Me’ with a link to your contact page, newsletter, or similar.
  4. Design
Don’t forget that LoadedWordPress is highly customizable. With that said, make sure your site matches your personality, or the feel of your business.

If you need a hand, we can help with any of the hard stuff. Just give us a shout and we’ll help figure it out.

Step 4 – Manage Menus

lwp custom menus Step 4 Manage Menus

Managing your content can be a little overwhelming, especially when you have a lot of it. I won’t get into how troublesome it was to organize content in previous versions of WordPress, I’ll instead get into why I’m excited about the newest release’s core functionality includes a Manage Menus page.

Within the Manage Menus page (simply go to Appearance > Manage Menus) you’re able to display navigation to as much or as little content for your viewers as you like. All in the same menu you are able to link to pages, single blog posts, categories, or even off site to let’s say, your Facebook Page, by using simple html. All pretty handy stuff.

To create a menu, simply go to Appearance > Manage Menus. Name your menu and assign your content. You’ll see Pages and Categories options on the left. Check the boxes next to the content you wish to apply to your navigation and press ‘Add to Menu.’ Custom links are available from a separate module, if you wish to link to anywhere else.

If you are unhappy with the order of your menu items, simply drag and drop your items where you’d like them to appear. If you’d like to have drop-down menus, just drag your item to where you wish it to appear and drop. It’s all handled with ajax, so it is intuitive and efficient.

When you are happy with the menu ordering, assign it to the the Location on left, click Save Menu, and you’re done.

In the default LoadedWordPress theme, you have the ability to add an extra navigation menu below your header. If you’d rather not, no big deal, it stays hidden until it gets used.

Menus are also able to be included in any widget section as an unordered list. We’ll talk more about widgets shortly!
